It's inspired by the "electric colors" of New York City, Coco tells WH.

It’s only appropriate that one of tennis’ brightest young stars would have a shoe to match the electricity she brings to her game. Enter Coco Gauff’s New Balance Coco CG1 in the new “City Brights” colorway—inspired by New York City's energy and perfect for the tennis sensation’s next match at the U.S. Open.

“New York reminds me of electric colors, bright lights, bright city. So that's where the neon came in,” the world’s sixth-ranked tennis player tells Women’s Health of the inspiration behind the attention-grabbing new shoe, which is available to purchase now. The contrasting warm red and brown tones were chosen by Coco’s mom and aunt to complement her skin tone. “The maroon, honestly, I wasn't sure how it was going to look on me. Then I tried it on in person and I really liked it,” Coco says. “Everybody has given me compliments on the shoe that has seen it so far.”

Coco’s first signature shoe, the classic CG1, takes inspiration from basketball shoes and designs from the 1990s. They’re made to help the 19-year-old feel speedy and powerful on the court—after all, the Marvel mega-fan says her ideal superpower would be super-speed. And she’s certainly been playing with out-of-this-world talent this season: Coco recently defeated world number one Iga Świątek before winning the Cincinnati Open, and became the first teenager to win the Washington Open. No biggie!

The rising star signed with New Balance when she was just 14 years old, and loves that her ‘fits and the CG1 have evolved alongside her tennis career. “It really feels like a family, and that's one of the things that drew me to New Balance and also [made me feel] comfortable to continue with them,” she says. “It's kind of cool to see how my career grew as New Balance grew.”

She’s also had the opportunity to hang with fellow New Balance athletes and track and field superstars Gabby Thomas and Sydney McLaughlin, the latter of whom gave her some valuable advice for her game.

“[Sydney] told me, ‘Stay within yourself and keep in your path,’” Coco recalls. “But we usually just talk about anything outside of sports, to be honest.” Yes, even the world’s top athletes make time for girl talk. “I just feel like they're really personable,” she says. “I'm like, how do I feel so comfortable talking to people that I didn't really know beforehand?”

Make no mistake, Coco will be all business when she hits the court in New York this week for the U.S. Open. And her New Balance kit will be all about the City Brights CG1, with three looks to match. “I have a neon outfit and a maroon outfit and a black one that I get to do what I want with,” she teases. “I still don't know what I'm going to choose, but it's really cool.”

Wishing Coco the best of luck at the tourney this week—no matter what happens, it’s obvious she’ll be doing it in signature style.
